Moomintroll and his parents, Moomin Mama and Moomin Papa, possess a delightfully innocent appearance with their bulbous noses and round tummies. There has been something of a global Moomin boom since Jansson’s death in 2001, meaning that the characters from her nine novels, numerous comic strips and countless illustrations are easily recognisable. The Moomins, the creation of Finnish author and artist Tove Jansson, are one of those things which, while strictly belonging in the children’s category, nonetheless have a subtle depth and complexity that many adults will always find appealing. However, there was something within me that knew I had an experience that others could relate to. I mean, I hadn’t published a book so I felt intimidated at times. One hurdle I had as I kept writing was to believe that I had the right to write. And over more time I started to realize that I had a story to tell. But after time I started to see that my many essays could hold together. I wrote, over many years, just for the love of writing. Well, at first I didn’t set out to write a memoir. What prompted you to write this memoir and feel that you had something special or relatable to say? True it wasn’t very uplifting but there was a sense of warmth and affection in his characters and tinges of humour mingled with the dispiriting nature of their predicament. Not quite ready to do battle with Grapes just however, I opted for the much shorter novel Cannery Row. It brought tears to my eyes, not of pity but of joy resulting from Steinbeck’s ability to wrest humour out of the most unlikely circumstances. It was not until I joined a local book club who just happened to be reading Of Mice and Men that month, that I got an inkling that I’d misjudged the man.
